Caribou National Forest

Last week I went hiking with my 2 daughters and grand-daughter in the Caribou National Forest. The leaves are just starting to change colours. I enjoyed the hike tremendously and the crisp smell of Autumn in the air! Here are a few shots of nature that I took.

Harvesting Time

It's harvesting time for the farmers! They have finally had some nice hot sunny weather to go out and harvest their hay. About a week ago we had quite the unexpected wind storm come up. It had been sunny and hot all day then around supper time the wind storm kicked in. It only lasted for about 10 minutes but the wind was blowing so strong it blew a bunch of pine cones out of our tree along with a birds nest. I noticed in my neighbors yard that their trampoline blew over. The power went off for a few hours. But after the wind had subsided there was an eery calm...the clouds in the skies were moving so fast and they turned brilliant red, yellow and orange. There was a big green tractor that was sitting in the field across from our house and with the majestic skies it made for some cool pictures!

He just takes the tractor another round,
An' pulls the plow across the ground,
And sends up another prayer.
He says: "Lord, I never complain, I never ask: 'Why?'
"Please don't let my dreams run dry,
Underneath, underneath this "Clifton" Sky."

Weston Canyon

I love going for a ride up Weston Canyon...there is always so much to see and it is breathtakingly beautiful! I stopped at the Weston Reservoir and watched a hawk soar over the reservoir looking for it's supper. A lone fisherman was enjoying his solitude on the hillside getting away from it all... the wildflowers are in bloom and paint a colorful backdrop for the lake. At the other end of the reservoir I noticed some playful pelicans enjoying their reflections while basking in the sun and the old barns tell a story of the satisfaction of a hard day's work. Life is good!

Twin Lakes Baby Owls

About three weeks ago while on a drive around Twin Lakes we came across a mama great horned owl and three of her babies perched high in a tree. The babies were sitting on one branch while the mama owl was sitting perched on a higher branch keeping a lookout for her babies. It was morning and I suspect the babies were asleep being that owls are nocturnal. The mama was not very impressed that I was trying to capture pictures. She kept making a clicking noise to let me know not to come too close. I was in awe at those little fury baby owls! I quickly took some shots but unfortunately I did not have the proper zoom lens or lighting. It was an awesome sight to behold and I was grateful to end up with a few pretty good pictures.

Somewhere Over The Rainbow.....

We have had one of the wettest months on record for the month of May this Spring! But with all the rain we've been having this is the first rainbow of the year that I have seen. This rainbow was very unique that besides having a double arch, it was sitting quite low to the ground and I could see the whole arch, also the clouds were constantly changing formations! I love rainbows and what they represent...God's promise and love for His children. Somewhere over the rainbow...skies are blue...and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true!!

The Giving Tree.....

For those of you who live in the Clifton/Oxford area or for those of you who have just driven by....you may have noticed that a very special tree is no longer standing. I am not sure how old this tree is but I have admired it for as long as I have lived here. Recently we have had some strong winds and storms that blew the tree down. Last winter I photographed a couple of eagles perched on the Giving Tree's branches. If you would like a treasured keepsake of the Giving Tree, I have some high resolution prints (in any size) and 3x5 cards available for purchase.

I love old barns! Each barn that I photograph is unique with it's own story and history...I saw this barn while on my way to Star Valley, Wyoming and it was calling out to me..."take my picture please!" I was drawn back in time and wondered about "it's story". I found this poem that expresses my feelings about old barns written by Mary Dow Brine (1816-1913)

The Old Barn

Oh! a jolly old place is grandpa's barn, where the doors stand open throughout the day,  and the cooing doves fly in and out,  and the air is sweet with the fragrant hay.

Where the grain lies over the oaken floor,  and the hens are busily scratching around,  and the sunbeams flicker, and dance, and shine,  and the breeze blows through with a merry sound.The swallows twitter and chirp all day  with fluttering wings in the old brown eaves,  and robin sing in the trees which lean  to brush the roof with their rustling leaves.The timid mice in the corner glean  a harvest sly from the scattered grain,  and the insects hum in the well-filled lofts,  and build their nests on the window-pain. Oh! dear old barn, where my childish days  were passed full oft, how I long to be  only a child again, to play  beneath thy roof with the old-time glee!

The Eagles and the Giving Tree

There is a tree not far from where I live that has always looks so barren and lonely to me. Recently I added a post called the "Barren Tree". But the last few times I have seen this tree, it has had not only one bald eagle but sometimes up to three bald eagles perched on it's branches waiting for their prey! I no longer call it the "barren tree" anymore but the "Giving Tree"

Barren Tree

Some winter days can be long and dreary! I long for Spring to get here! I could not help but notice this barren tree looking so lonely. There was a bald Eagle perched on one of it's branches and my thoughts were that this barren tree appreciated the company! I was hoping to catch a photo of the eagle sitting there but he was too quick for me! I did manage to catch him in flight heading the opposite direction from me. I felt a little sad for the tree afterward; like I had frightened his only friend away!

Like the eagles we have to move our wings to soar like an eagle

The tree that never had to fight,

For sun and sky and air and light,

But stood out on the open plain,

And always got it’s share of rain,

I love barns! They have a story to tell...The other day I took a picture of a beautiful old barn that I love. I had taken a picture of that same barn last summer. I love the contrasts that show the different seasons. Just like barns, we too have a story to tell. Our lives are filled with contrasts and we too need celebrate the many seasons of our lives.

It's that time of year when people love to send out photo Christmas cards! I had a lot of fun taking Jamie & David's Christmas pictures! We don't have any snow yet but we were able to find a 'skiff of snow' and a little frozen creek a little ways up in the canyon. It worked for a nice photo shoot!

Recently I had the opportunity to photograph the Parker family. They are a wonderful and beautiful family and also the best of friends! I took their portraits at Twin Lakes. The weather was warm but windy! So it was hard not to have someones hair 'blowing in the wind'! It was a bit 'tricky' to get so many bodies positioned...I have never taken portraits for that large a family before so I was little apprehensive to say the least! We did not have a lot of time so I was not able to take as many photos as I would have liked! I did not plan to do portraits of the some of the Parker girls or Jay and Tracy that day but I ended up doing a short session and some of them turned out beautiful! We have had unusual rainfall for the month of June. We have had several spectacular thunder and lightning storms as well! One evening it looked like tornado weather and the skies got extremely dark. I was outside taking pictures of the clouds as long as I could until the rain hit hard. The clouds were beautiful and fascinating to me!
